So you’ve returned to work after the Christmas break, feeling relaxed, rejuvenated (and perhaps a little heavier!) and with the constant stress of work playing on your mind.

In many ways, the break is the perfect time to reflect on your career- whether you’re happy in the position that you are in or feel that it is time for a career change, a break from your busy work schedule can allow you to gain a clearer perspective of this.

If you’re feeling this way:

  • First things first – don’t panic!

Remember, you’re not alone in feeling like this, and you certainly won’t be the last. It’s easier than it sounds but try not to stress or alienate yourself from the situation, instead try to look at it as a crucial implication of how you are currently feeling in your work life.

  •  Sit down and take some time:

Assess where you are now and where you want to be – perhaps you feel you want to move up in your current company, move to a different company or change industry entirely.

  • Think, Think, Think!

Use this time wisely and start thinking of what you really want to achieve at work. Is it a higher salary, better career development opportunities or more work life balance? Perhaps a time-frame could help. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

  •  Don’t make any drastic decisions:

Remember, this is a time for assessing your options- any drastic decisions could damage your long-term career happiness.

What you should do:

  • Talk to a career advisor:

At Adlestrop Consulting, we can provide you with bespoke and impartial career advice, if you want to meet a friendly face for a coffee and a catch up, our one to one meetings will be perfect for you.

  • Look at your current skills:

We can look at these skills and see if these are transferable and we can discuss how these skills can be used better.

  • Asses and Update your CV:

It is important that you assess and then update your CV of any new skills or experiences that you have gained whilst in your current job. By doing this, it will allow you to see how you have progressed and how you could adapt these in your role in the future.

If it’s just a case of January Blues:

  •  Make a Plan:

If after all it’s just a bad case of the January blues, then create something that you can look forward to.  This could be anything from a weekend away to a sporting event. Putting plans in place for the year ahead will lift your spirits and in turn make you more motivated to work towards it!

  • Give yourself some TLC:

Looking after No.1 at this time is crucial to keeping those spirits up. From eating well to daily exercise and catching those ZZZ’s, you’ll not only release those happy endorphins but will likely help to put you in a better frame of mind.

  • Try something new:

Slipping back into a routine can be difficult especially if it’s something that you don’t particularly want to do. While there are things you might not be able to change straight, learning a new skill or adding something different into the mix will give you some control over the January grind.
