So, you have just come back from your summer holiday, feeling tanned and relaxed but with the thought of returning back to work looming in the back of your mind.
In many ways, a holiday is the perfect time to reflect on your career-whether you’re happy in the position that you are in or feel that it is time for a career change. A break from your busy work schedule can allow you to gain a clearer perspective on this, perhaps even discussing your thoughts with valued friends or partner. Remember…

If you’re feeling this way:

  •  You’re not alone: First things first, don’t panic! You’re not the first person to feel this way, and you certainly won’t be the last. It’s easier than it sounds but try not to stress or alienate yourself from the situation. Instead try to look at it as a crucial signifier of how you are currently feeling in your work life.
  • Take time to reflect and review: Assess where you are now and where you want to be – perhaps you feel you want to move up in your current company, or time to move to a different organisation… or change industry entirely! Use this time wisely and begin to think of what you really want to achieve at work, perhaps a time-frame could help. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  •  Get back into the rhythm: Before returning to work try to structure your days as if you were back at your job, allowing you to get back into your normal work routine. This way when you actually return you won’t feel so overwhelmed.

What you should do:

  • If after this reflection, you still feel the job may not be for you, talk to a professional career advisor. Here at Adlestrop Consulting we can:
  •  Provide you with bespoke and impartial career advice: If you want to meet an expert in their field with a ‘friendly face’ for a coffee and a catch up, our one to one meetings will be perfect for you.
  • Experts in the Accountancy, Legal and Business Development markets: We can help to guide you on the options that are available for you, allowing you to see what is currently in the market or just advice on how to broach the subject with your boss.
  • Assess what you really want: By focussing on your individual needs we can help you to find out what it is that you really want out of your career, whilst also taking the time to look at your skills and seeing how these can be applied.

Finally…

Stay positive! This can be a great time for you, remember that change can be good when managed correctly…explore your potential!
