Why this Summer is the riskiest yet to sit on your hands about your career

Summer review of career

Summer has always been a natural point to pause, recharge and reflect. Yet for many professionals, it has become an annual ritual of telling themselves, “I’ll think about my career after the holidays.” The weeks pass, work gets busy again and another year slips by without any meaningful change.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Perhaps you’ve been saying the same thing for five, ten or even fifteen years. You know you’re capable of more, you’ve considered exploring new opportunities, but staying where you are has always felt like the safer option.

This year, however, that assumption carries more risk than ever before.

The accountancy and finance market is evolving at a pace that is difficult to predict. Firms are adapting to changing economic conditions, private equity investment continues to reshape ownership models, mergers and acquisitions are altering competitive landscapes, and many businesses are becoming increasingly selective about where they invest and who they recruit.

At the same time, hiring volumes have become more targeted. There may be fewer opportunities available than in previous years, but the demand for professionals with the right sector experience, technical expertise and commercial acumen remains exceptionally strong. The gap between those with sought-after specialisms and those with broader, less differentiated experience is widening.

By Christmas, the market could look very different again. Which firms will be growing? Which service lines will receive greater investment? Which specialisms will be in highest demand? Nobody can answer those questions with certainty, which is precisely why waiting for the “perfect time” to think about your career is becoming an increasingly risky strategy.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you should be looking for a new role tomorrow.

Instead, use the quieter summer period to ask yourself some important questions.

  1. Are you still learning?
  2. Does your current firm offer the opportunities you need to achieve your long-term ambitions?
  3. Are you developing expertise in areas that will remain valuable over the next five years, or simply becoming more experienced in the same role?

Taking stock now also allows you to understand your current market value. Speaking with a specialist recruiter, updating your LinkedIn profile or exploring the market doesn’t commit you to making a move. It simply gives you better information to make future decisions with confidence.

The professionals who build the strongest careers rarely make decisions in response to a crisis. They prepare well in advance, understand where the market is heading and position themselves accordingly.

This summer, don’t let another opportunity for reflection become another year of standing still. The market is changing too quickly to assume that doing nothing is the safest choice. Investing just a few hours in reviewing your career could be the decision that opens the door to your next opportunity – before everyone else starts looking.

Whether you’re looking to hire or be hired, reach out now to achieve your goals.
